Pressing the D-Pad in the opposite direction will result in an upwards throw. Pressing the D-Pad in the up direction will result in a higher-arced throw. Throwing while crouched will result in a small throw. Holding the throw button starts a countdown to explosion on the grenade.
I looked up strategy wiki and binded the controls to their ps1 counterparts. Y (or up face button) is jump, X (or left face button) is use, A (or bottom face button) is crouch, and I think B (or right face button) is fire/throw, if I remember correctly.

I grew up with the PS1 version of Abe's Oddysee, and while the gamepad support for the PC version isn't TERRIBLE or anything. For me, it's just... well, not the same. The default controls are nothing like the PS1 version, and although the layout can be altered to closer resemble PS1 controls, there is no support for triggers (L2/R2), the start menu is set to L3 for XBOX controllers (I almost missed this entirely), and you have to press ENTER on your keyboard to save games.

As Abe, climb back down and go left. Climb up to the right ledge and jump across the top to the left well.
